Hey everyone! How are we all today?
Top 5 is created by Mandy over at Devouring Books. If you want to know the upcoming topics, I’ll provide a link here.
This week’s top 5 themes is retellings! I thought it’d take me some time to come up with books but as I was looking through my lists I didn’t realise how many books were retellings!
A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Just that alone immediately grabs my attention. I have not read it yet but it’s on my shelf waiting.
The Lady Jane series by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows
This series takes famous Jane’s from history (fictional or not) and retell their story, throwing in some comedy. It’s such a fun series!
The first book My Lady Jane is about Lady Jane Grey. In history, Lady Jane Grey became Queen for nine days until she was executed. But in this retelling will she meet the same fate?
The second book My Plain Jane follows Jane Eyre. Full of mystery and ghost hunting. In this book we get to hang out with Mr. Rochester, Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Bronte and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood.
The last book which has yet to be published is My Calamity Jane. This follows Calamity Jane so therefore it’s set in the Wild West and along the way we get to know Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. I can’t wait for this one!
The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer
This series are retellings all about Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Snow White. I’ve only Cinder (Cinderella retelling) and she’s a cyborg who’s a mechanic set in New Beijing. Even though I’ve only read the first book this is a series I really enjoy/ Some people don’t like or think it’s mediocre and predictable but I love the retelling aspect. Even if it’s predictable but done well then it’s all good.
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
A Wizard of Oz story with a twist where Dorothy is the villain. Everything is reversed. The Good Witches can’t be trusted and the Wicked Witches are now your allies. This will be an interesting read. Again, another series that’s been sitting on my shelf. I don’t know why.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen, Seth Grahame-Smith
After seeing the movie I am really curious about the book version. This will be crazy and great at the same time haha. Honestly, for me this is going to be a hit or flop.
What retellings have you read and loved?
Until next time…
xx
Out of all the titles here, I’ve only read A Curse So Dark and Lonely (Harper was a little annoying for me, but I liked the book in overall). I’ve been meaning to get to Dorothy Must Die, it sounds so interesting! Awesome post btw π

Thank you! I’m curious to see what I think of A Curse so Dark and Lonely. Glad you liked it π Yes Dorothy Must Die sounds so intriguing. It’ll be interesting to read about OZ all upside down.

So I just read A Curse So Dark and Lonely and I really really enjoyed it! It was everything I love in a fantasy and a retelling! Highly recommend. I was hesitant because I’m not big on romance but it was totally worth all the hype!
