Hello! How are you today? Hope you’re having a pleasant day šŸ˜€

Today, I’m going to be showing you my (indefinite!) TBR for the NEWTS readathon! The continuation readathon from the O.W.L’s that was hosted by Book Roast (I’ll add a link to her video explaining the readathon right here) in April. I had so much fun doing this, I wrote about it on my blog here. I loved how creative the readathon was and because it was the first readathon I took part in and can’t wait for NEWTS to start.

Okay, if you read my post for the O.W.L’s readathon you’ll know that I picked my exams based on choosing the career of a herbologist in the wizarding world. I passed my O.W.L’s by reading/taking my three exams as well as finishing an extra book.

The goal for my NEWTs is to achieve an O in Herbology, an E in Potions and an A in Care of Magical Creatures. The three levels for each class goes A-E-O (Acceptable, Exceeded Expectations, Outstanding), so that means that in order to reach O level I’ll need to read a book for A to get to level E, read a book for the E prompt, then to read a level O book to achieve it. Does that make sense? Probably not. And each book has to match a certain prompt.

So this is my (indefinite!) TBR for the NEWTS. I say indefinite because they’re not set in stone and I might change a book, if I’m not in the mood to read it or something else comes up.

Class: Herbology (aim: an O)

So, for this exam in order to pass I’ll need to read the three prompts (A-E-O). The prompt for an A is Mandrake! Quick, put your headphones on! Listen to an audiobook (if not – a green cover).

For this prompt I do have a couple of audiobooks that I could use but my priority is to listen to the Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. It’s so annoying that I have yet to finish this. I swear series have always been a struggle for me despite my love for them and the obsession of buying new series to read. Somebody stop me! It just hasn’t grasped my attention yet but I feel as though it’s only because I’m stuck in the beginning chapters and once I get stuck into the story then I’ll be fine. Hopefully, this will be the encouragement I need to finish it.

Other possible options are:

  • What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon (audiobook)
  • Firstlife by Gena Showalter (green cover)
  • Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (green cover, I mean it’s very light green!)

The prompt for an E is read a book between 350-390 pages.

  • Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi
  • The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman
  • The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
  • Poison Princess by Kresley Cole

The prompt for an O is read a book with a flower on the cover.

  • Wizard of Oz by L.Frank Baum (the published version I have by Hinkler has poppies all on the cover. Aren’t the illustrations so pretty!)

Class: Potions (aim: an E)

The prompt for A is Polyjuice potion: read your friend’s favourite book (G said it can be anyone’s favourite such as a booktubers, friend, family member, etc). In this case my selection is from Booktubers.

  • Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody (Emmabooks)
  • The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (Brittany the Bibliophile, Hailey in Bookland)
  • Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco (Hailey in Bookland)
  • Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa (Jessethereader)

The prompt for an E is House ingredient: book with a cover in your Hogwarts house colour.

A month or so ago I finally took the sorting quiz on Pottermore and it sorted me into Slytherin. I’ll admit it’s not the house I pictured myself in but it’s official, I’m a Slytherin. Actually, I do love the dark green. So, yeah if you can’t tell the book I need to read needs a green cover.

  • Firstlife by Gena Showalter
  • Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
  • The Sin Eater by Melinda Salisbury

Class: Care of Magical Creatures (aim: an A)

The prompt for an A is Follow the spiders?! Why couldn’t it be follow the butterflies!? Book that starts with a letter A, for Aragog.

For this prompt I’ve chosen to read Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The edition I have is not long but is so adorable. It’s by the same collection as the Wizard of Oz book I mentioned in a couple of prompts above.

I’m going to keep this separate. As I feel confident in myself and as Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz are short books (for my edition) I might be ambitious and do the next prompt for Care of Magical Creatures. It’s not needed as it will be an extra exam. I guess it’s a way for me to be prepared if I have any bonus time. So if I get to this, amazing, and if not, then it’s all fine as I (hopefully!) should’ve passed all the other exams and got my magical career! šŸ˜€

So, the prompt for an E in Care for Magical Creatures is a book under 300 pages.

  • Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott with Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Laconis
  • The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

Alright! That’s my TBR for August pretty much! Wow. For my O.W.L’s I read four books so trying to finish six (maybe seven depending on my extra book) will definitely be a challenge but I’m excited to start.

Is anyone else taking part in the NEWTs readathon?

Until next time…
